Haematological malignancies in Belgium, 2004-2018

This e-book publication is the result of a close collaboration between the Belgian Cancer Registry (BCR) and the Belgian Hematology Society (BHS) and a partnership with the Belgian Society of Paediatric Haematology Oncology (BSPHO).

The e-book describes the epidemiological situation of haematological malignancies in Belgium for the 15 consecutive incidence years of the period 2004–2018. Besides results on incidence, prevalence, relative 5-year survival and trends, as presented in the previous publication, Hematologische maligniteiten, 2012, this new publication also includes incidence projections until 2025 and relative 10-year survival rates for the main haematological subtypes.

The publication shows that the number of new diagnoses of haematological malignancies is increasing in Belgium, mainly in the ageing population (over-70s). The results also show a sustained improvement in the relative 5-year survival of patients with haematological malignancies (compared with the previous publication). These results are in line with recent innovations in diagnostics and treatment in this field, such as precision medicine.
